Shereen Dyer is a qualified barrister who has been advising and representing clients in the Magistrates, County, Crown and Appeal Courts since 2003. She prosecutes and defends in jury trials in the Crown Court, advises and represents in civil cases from small claims to multi-track, and has experience before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal and Court of Appeal.
Following changes in 2010 to the laws regulating barristers Shereen is now able to offer her specialist legal advice and representation services directly to the public as well as through solicitors. This gives you the choice of accessing the services of a barrister in the way that best suits your needs.
The scheme under which members of the public access barristers directly is called Public Access. Some questions that you might have about the scheme and what it means for you are answered here and you can find more information at the Bar Council information pages.
Barristers are specialist lawyers who provide expert legal advice, advocacy and the drafting of documents and they specifically train in court advocacy and advice. The differences between solicitors and barristers are now largely historic, but in the past members of the public would seek the advice of a solicitor first, who would offer more general advice on a wide range of subjects. The specialist services of a barrister would then be sought by a solicitor on behalf of a client for detailed advice and representation at courts or tribunals. This would mean that the client would have to pay two sets of fees. Public Access represents a financial saving and greater choice for the public as only one set of fees needs to be paid.
